In March a logistics operator in the Jebel Ali free zone asked a question we hear about twice a year: can a 15-ton hydraulic yard ramp survive 45°C ambient heat without cooking its own seals? The answer is yes, but not with a catalog-standard build. Three things changed, and this is the whole job.
Why This Yard Had No Dock at All
The customer runs a third-party cross-dock operation on a paved slab inside the free zone. Their building has roller shutters at 1.1 m (43.3 in) sill height but no loading dock: the site is leased for five years and the landlord will not permit pit excavation or a permanent ramp. Every container arriving by road is destuffed on that slab, using a 3.5 t and two 5 t forklifts.
Before they called us they used loose steel plates and stacked timber. A 40 ft (12.2 m) box took about four hours to clear, and a plate had already kicked out under a loaded forklift. They needed a ramp any of their three forklifts could use, that one man could reposition, that was not fixed to the ground, and that would not fail in July, when slab surface temperature reaches 60°C (140°F).
| Site condition | Measured value | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Summer ambient (Jul–Aug) | 45–48°C (113–118°F) | Hydraulic oil and seal compound selection |
| Slab surface temperature | Up to 60°C (140°F) | Tyre compound and bearing grease |
| Container bed height on chassis | 1,250 mm / 4’1″ | Ramp length and slope |
| Forklift fleet | 3.5 t + 2 × 5.0 t (7,700 / 11,000 lb) | Capacity rating with margin |
| Daily container moves | 28–34 boxes across three shifts | Duty cycle and oil temperature |
| Ground | Reinforced slab, joints every 6 m | Wheel loading and deck support |
What We Shipped
One model, not three. Mixing capacities on a yard this size creates training problems, so we standardised on the heavy-duty hydraulic mobile yard ramp rated 15 t (33,070 lb) static and 10 t (22,050 lb) dynamic — roughly 2.5× the heaviest axle load. Six units were ordered: four for Jebel Ali, two for a Sharjah yard.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Model | HRHS heavy-duty hydraulic mobile yard ramp |
| Rated capacity | 15 t static / 10 t dynamic (33,070 / 22,050 lb) |
| Overall length × width | 10,300 × 2,200 mm (33’10” × 7’3″) |
| Deck height range | 1,200–1,680 mm (3’11″–5’6″), hydraulic |
| Slope at 1,250 mm bed height | ≈ 12% (≈ 6.8°) |
| Main beam | 160 × 80 × 5 mm rectangular tube (6.3″ × 3.1″ × 0.2″) |
| Deck | 5 mm (0.2 in) checkered plate |
| Lifting | Manual hydraulic pump + twin cylinders; 380 V/50 Hz electric unit optional |
| Support legs | Heavy-duty screw legs, 28 t / 80 t rated pair |
| Side guard rail | 200 mm (7.9 in) painted steel |
| Finish | Sa 2.5 blast, epoxy primer + polyurethane topcoat, 120 µm DFT |
Engineering for 45°C, Not for a Catalog
Heat does not kill a hydraulic yard ramp in one dramatic failure. It eats it through four mechanisms, each of which can be designed out for a few hundred dollars per unit.
Hydraulic oil. Standard ISO VG 46 in a sealed reservoir on a 60°C slab runs hotter still, and viscosity falls as temperature climbs. We specified a high-viscosity-index oil (VI above 150) so film strength holds at the top of the range instead of letting piston seals run metal to metal. Target working oil temperature: 50–60°C (122–140°F).
Seals. Piston and rod seals were uprated from standard nitrile to a higher-temperature compound — the cheapest change on the list, and the one that decides whether you rebuild cylinders in month 14 or 60.
Wheels and pivots. Heat-resistant solid tyres, and wheel bearings packed with high-temperature lithium-complex grease (NLGI 2, dropping point above 260°C / 500°F). General-purpose grease migrates out of a hub within a season at that temperature.
Paint. A coastal free zone has salt in the air on top of the heat. Epoxy primer plus polyurethane topcoat at 120 µm DFT was the baseline; for the two units closer to the water we quoted hot-dip galvanizing, worth 12–18% more per unit in a salt-laden yard.
Freight and Documentation
A 10,300 mm (33’10”) ramp does not share a container. Each unit ships on its own 40 ft high-cube, deck down, blocked with timber and lashed at six points — six ramps, six boxes out of Nansha. Transit to Jebel Ali is typically 18–24 days port to port.
The paperwork catches people out. A mechanical ramp with a manual pump needs no electrical conformity certificate, but the 380 V electric pump brings MOIAT — successor to the former ESMA — into play: an ECAS Certificate of Conformity is required, and labels and documentation must be available in Arabic. Confirm that with your importer before the container sails.
Twelve Months Later
By month twelve the Jebel Ali yard had put roughly 7,900 container moves across four ramps. No cylinder seal failed, and oil sampled at month 12 stayed inside the viscosity spec, so the change interval was extended rather than shortened. Two wheel bearings were replaced on the busiest ramp, the one facing the afternoon sun; after it moved to the shaded row, no repeat. Deck wear stayed inside the fork-wheel entry zone. Average destuff time for a 40 ft box fell from about four hours to under 90 minutes. The one thing we would change is to quote hot-dip galvanizing on the two units closest to the water from day one, because in a coastal yard the coating question always comes back.
FAQ
Can a hydraulic yard ramp work reliably at 45°C ambient?
Yes, with high-viscosity-index oil, uprated cylinder seals, heat-resistant tyres and high-temperature bearing grease. Hold working oil temperature at 50–60°C (122–140°F) and park the unit in shade. A catalog-standard ramp will run, but its service intervals shorten sharply.
What ramp capacity do I need for a 5-ton forklift?
Size on axle load, not on the forklift’s rated capacity. A loaded 5 t forklift can present 10–12 t on the ramp at any moment, so a 15 t static / 10 t dynamic heavy-duty mobile yard ramp is the normal answer — a margin of roughly 2–2.5×.
How long does shipping from China to Jebel Ali take?
Port to port from Nansha or Shenzhen to Jebel Ali is typically 18–24 days. Add 20–30 days production for a six-unit order with a modified hydraulic package, plus clearance at both ends.
Do I need certification to import a yard ramp into the UAE?
A mechanical ramp with a manual pump does not require an electrical conformity certificate. With a 380 V electric pump, MOIAT’s ECAS Certificate of Conformity applies, and documentation and warning labels must be available in Arabic.
