Mechanical Edge of Dock Leveler
Mechanical Edge of Dock Leveler – Power-Free Dock Bridging
The SX-EOD-183 Mechanical Edge of Dock Leveler mounts directly on the front face of the loading dock and bridges the gap and height difference between dock and truck bed. Powered entirely by heavy tension springs and a manual lever, it needs no motor, no hydraulic power pack and no wiring — one person inserts the approx. 1 m lever and presses down to dock the deck and extend the lip onto the trailer. Work continues through power failures, and maintenance cost stays close to zero.
Installation is pit-free: the leveler face-mounts to the dock front through embedded channels, transition plates or angle fittings, so existing docks can be retrofitted without civil work or production downtime. Four load ratings — 6 / 8 / 15 / 20 t — share one deck width, so the same 1,830 mm (72″) platform serves everything from hand pallet trucks to heavy forklifts.
Capacity: 6 / 8 / 15 / 20 t | Deck Width: 1,830 mm (72″) | Deck Depth: 305 mm | Lip Length: 400 mm | Working Range: ±125 mm | Model: SX-EOD-183

Structure & Components
| Component | Construction |
|---|---|
| Deck | 10–20 mm chequer plate (thickened with load rating), reinforced with underside stiffeners |
| Lip | Chequer + flat plate composite, 10–20 mm total; arch-reinforced |
| Front / rear hinges | Full-length tubular piano hinge: D22–25 mm pins, 4–8 mm wall seamless tube |
| Impact protection | Laminated reinforced rubber bumpers 300×200×100 mm on 400 mm steel brackets |
| Counterbalance | Heavy tension springs + manual lever linkage (approx. 1 m lever) |
| Mounting plate | Rear plate fully welded to the dock’s embedded channel / transition plate, carrying the full load |
Five No-Pit Mounting Methods
- Embedded channel (recommended) – channel ≥ 200 mm embedded in the dock face, anchor bars at 250 mm spacing; mounting plate fully welded
- Flat transition plate – flat or inclined plate anchored to the dock surface; suits concrete docks without embedments
- Angle steel transition – inclined or bent angle steel anchored along the dock edge; ideal for retrofit projects
- Steel approach ramp – anchored flush with the dock face, doubling as an indoor floor transition
- Recessed pocket – approx. 305×405 mm pocket with 75 mm installation clearance each side
Anchor bolts: shear strength ≥ 45 kN, pull-out ≥ 27 kN; never fix into cracked concrete or expansion joints.
How to Choose the Right Capacity
Required capacity ≥ GVW × 1.5, where GVW = maximum forklift weight + battery + heaviest load. Use ×2.1 if any severe condition applies (more than 8 truck turnarounds/day, three-wheel forklifts, travel above 5 km/h, reach or side-shift attachments); ×2.55 if two or more apply.
| Working Example | Calculation | Selected Rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3 t counterbalance forklift + 2 t load | GVW ≈ 8 t → ×1.5 = 12 t | Choose 15 t |
| 2 t electric forklift + 1.5 t load | GVW ≈ 5 t → ×1.5 = 7.5 t | Choose 8 t |
| 1.5 t hand pallet truck + 1 t load | GVW ≈ 2.5 t → ×1.5 ≈ 3.75 t | Choose 6 t |
Maintenance Schedule
| Interval | Maintenance Items |
|---|---|
| Monthly | Grease moving pins with industrial lubricant; clear debris from deck surface and pocket; check spring bolts for tightness |
| Quarterly | Inspect moving parts for wear and weld condition; grease nipples; check bumpers (replace below 100 mm effective thickness); verify safety labels |
| Semi-annually | Full condition review; re-torque all fasteners; adjust spring tension equally on both sides to prevent deck float |
Application Scenarios
Power-free operation keeps loading running through power cuts.
Marine paint finish resists humidity and wash-down environments.
Face-mount design serves retrofit docks without pit construction.
6–20 t ratings cover pallet trucks to heavy forklift traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mechanical edge of dock leveler?
It mounts at the face of the dock (not in a pit) and bridges the gap between dock and truck bed using a spring-counterbalanced deck and lip, operated with a manual lever — no electricity or hydraulics required.
What height difference can it handle?
The SX-EOD-183 works 125 mm above and below dock level (±5″). Truck beds within that window are served normally; for larger differences an extended lip or a pit-type hydraulic dock leveler is recommended.
How many people are needed to operate it?
Just one person. The spring counterbalance does the heavy work — the operator presses the approx. 1 m lever down to raise and dock the deck, and the lip extends automatically onto the truck bed.
Is there a powered version?
Yes — an electric hydraulic version with push-button lift is available (220V / 380V / 415V / 24V). See our Electric Hydraulic Edge of Dock Leveler.
